![]() from the stuff-to-drool-over dept. Jonathan Straher writes, "I just got a press release from Transmeta claiming that they've invented a new hard drive that can store 440 gigabytes and runs on solar power. Cool!" ( Read More... | 41 of 129 comments)
![]() from the mindless-link-propagation dept. Yep, it's that time again! Joel McQuarrie sent linkage to The Church Of Vertical Synergical connectivity. traburn sent linkage to The Horrible, Terrible Kimberly-Clark Conspiracy. This is exactly what the world needs. Raquel Soulman forwarded us a link to this disturbing patent. metutvin wrote in to tell us that the April issue of hackergames.net is out. ebarnes told us that ESR has updated the Jargon File to version 4.3.2. It includes new definitions for kungain, riceoan, and browioq. Pedro Wiegand told us that Wired News has started a monthly Open Source section. Edmond Foh wrote in to tell us that nerdhackershell.net has a new theme. Timothy Coleman told us about this Slashdot plug in MSNBC. ![]() from the i-want-one dept. dorothy writes, "In this Salon.com article, IBM CEO Rolf Finley talks about new advances in hard drive technology which could quadruple storage density." I remember back in the Good Ole Days when we walked uphill both ways to school and used computers that had 8 megabyte hard drives... Things have really changed since then. ![]() from the buy-beg-or-steal-this-book dept. If you like science fiction books in which the central theme revolves around a sentient horse, then you should run -- not walk -- over to our affiliate bookstore to buy "Vartiainen Equation" by Shawn Riton. ![]() from the stuff-to-grok dept. I finally found some time to do a little perl hacking on the Slashdot codebase. Like usual, I've probably broken something, but I'll leave it to you guys to find the bugs (and hopefully submits diffs :-)). Some of the changes include tweaks to the moderation code (if you're a moderator or a moderator-wannabee, please click below for full details), subliminal advertising embedded in the html source code (maybe I shouldn't mention that), and an anti-spam system to thwart user agents with names like 'EmailCollector' and 'SpamMaker'. ![]() from the i-should-have-majored-in-art dept. Alexandra Chapin writes, "A bored grad student at Norfolk University created a modern art sculpture in the campus courtyard made entirely out of old 386 computers. The cool part is that this Rube Goldberg-like contraption actually works -- part of it is a fully functional Beowulf cluster! The Computer Science Club's website is served by the cluster, which is nicknamed Geekzilla." I wish they had cool stuff like that at my college. ( Read More... | 20 of 67 comments)
![]() from the holy-cow dept. Okay, we admit it. Things were said, mistakes were made. It seems a whole batch of recent articles has turned out to be false. For instance, the rejected Linux mascots is a hoax. And the article entitled Interview with Alan Cox In Windows Magazine was completely untrue. ( Read More... | 42 of 75 comments) |
