Feature: Beyond World Revolution
TechnologyPosted by JonKatz on Saturday January 18, @04:21AM
from the I-Like-To-Use-Capital-Letters dept.
World Revolution is an idea whose time has come. But narrow-minded anonymous cowards and congresscritters must change their ways before it can happen. First of a four-part series.

NewsPosted by Hemos on Saturday January 18, @03:15AM
from the stuff-to-read dept.
Another day, another dotcom bites the dust. This time it's Glcd.Com. This article in TechWeb analyzes the latest victim in the dotcom downturn, suggesting that the company failed because it wasted all of their money on the lamest Super Bowl commercial ever produced.

SuSE Stock Drops By 84 Percent!
NewsPosted by CmdrTaco on Saturday January 18, @02:14AM
from the stuff-to-read dept.
Roman Narayan was the first of many to tell us about this article over at Drudge Report. After the news broke, the NASDAQ plummeted by 10 percent! Quick, somebody get me some aspirin. Update by CT: Fine, we messed up again, this article is a scam. Will you quit flaming us now?

Slashdot Effect Strikes Rooozilon.com
Slashdot.orgPosted by CmdrTaco on Saturday January 18, @12:24AM
from the oops-i'm-sorry-about-that dept.
Yesterday's story about Rooozilon.com triggered a massive attack on their website, causing 4 servers to literally explode. At least 2 employees were injured by flying sparks, but none seriously. We really do apologize for this massive denial-of-service attack: Slashdot needs to use its power for good, not evil.

Modern Art Beowulf Cluster
NewsPosted by Hemos on Friday January 17, @09:15PM
from the i-should-have-majored-in-art dept.
Lyle Weismuller writes, "A bored grad student at Ludwig Ivy League College created a modern art sculpture in the campus courtyard made entirely out of old 286 computers. The cool part is that this Rube Goldberg-like contraption actually works -- part of it is a fully functional Beowulf cluster! The Computer Science Club's website is served by the cluster, which is nicknamed Geekzilla." I wish they had cool stuff like that at my college.

Ask Slashdot: Which MTA do you prefer?
SlashbackPosted by Cliff on Friday January 17, @07:50PM
from the what-a-question dept.
Jeff Chastain wrote in with this good question: "I convinced my mother to upgrade her system to Linux. Unfortunately, I've had trouble setting her up with a good MTA. Any thoughts? Which is the best choice for a newbie?" I have a few thoughts on this, but I'll let the Slashdot community take it from here.

    Book Reviews

Guadalupe Fung sent in a review of How To Write Programs Compatible With GNOME and KDE, a book that might finally put an end to some of the flame wars.

For the Perl lovers amongst us (I think that's everyone), Thomas Myers sent us a review of the amazing Perl for Smarties, a great IDG book.

Fox Hesselt reviews the sci-fi classic, "The Machine Returns", by Alexander Giles. It's a must-read for those interested in a sentient penguin.
