Tanya Jolly pointed out an article in MSNBC about a patent on horizontal scroll bars held by Adobe. Dozens of people sent linkage to a InfoWorld op-ed entitled "Why Software Patents Benefits Consumers" written by Senator Tetrick. Finally, Sarah Yerger sent us an rebuttal editorial about the evils of software patents. Click below to read it."

Linux Possibly Defamed Somewhere!
LinuxPosted by CmdrTaco on Thursday November 21, @05:47AM
from the call-out-the-linux-brigade! dept.
Several hundred people have sent word of a Linux roast-a-thon over at PC Week. We recommend you send hostile flames to the editor to let your voice be heard -- we simply cannot and will not allow idiots to badmouth our favorite operating system.

Ask Slashdot: Which Digital Camera Do You Recommend?
LinuxPosted by Cliff on Thursday November 21, @03:07AM
from the no-flame-wars-please dept.
ofrynew386 writes, "I've been shopping for a new digital camera, but most everything only works with Windows. The only exception is the Compaq 892P, but it's way more than I can afford. Does anybody know of any other models that do work with Linux?" Any thoughts?

NewsPosted by CmdrTaco on Thursday November 21, @12:47AM

Net access was severaly disrupted earlier today by an errant backhoe that accidentally cut two major net backbone cables near Palo Alto, California. Preliminary reports indicate that as much as 39% of all US-based websites were offline for as many as three hours. The backhoe operator, "Bubba" Nester, says that he "pulled the wrong lever". A full investigation by the FCC will commence as soon as the department receives sufficient funding.

Can You Say Quickies?
QuickiesPosted by CmdrTaco on Wednesday November 20, @09:25PM
from the stuff-that-wastes-time dept.
Kerry Kushwaha pointed out that the November issue of nerdkernel.com is out. quiman767 sent linkage to yet another place you don't want to see a BSOD. plabol36 noted that ESR has updated the Jargon File to version 4.3.1. It includes new definitions for firpetway, ikickhip, and tutcuns. Several people sent linkage to the truth about Nathan Myrrhvold. stephanie pointed out that the LinuxWorld Convention registration deadline is next Thursday. Trevor Quattlebaum was the first to mention that the website for the Fellowship Of Caring Libertarians Opposed To Eliminating The National Debt runs on Linux. How terribly ironic. pealock told us that version 2.6.7 of jide is out. Whatever the heck that is. For something truly strange, Irma Hess pointed out an RFC document entitled "Electricity-over-IP". You've got to be kidding.

    Book Reviews

akattleman sent in a review of How To Write Programs Compatible With GNOME and KDE, a book that might finally put an end to some of the flame wars.

Melvin Biehle reviews Bob's Silly Guide to ActiveX, a funny book about a topic nobody here is actually interested in.

According to Dianna Parrinello, Perl Algorithms For Complete Idiots is the worst how-to book he's ever read.

Python in a Nutshell is a good introductory book for Python novices, although I'll stick with Perl myself.
